Topeka Science & Tech Fest | Oct. 13, 2018
Topeka Science and Tech Fest was a street festival focused on educating and involving kids from kindergarten through eighth grade in all varieties of science. At the festival we had the pleasure of describing our experiment and generating interest in agriculture science and heat stress with almost 50 adults and over 40 kids. The weather was great and the kids were excited to learn about Kansas Wheat! |

KSU GROW The Science Behind the News | Nov. 3, 2018
The Crop Ecophysiology Lab had the privilege of running a workshop during the GROW (Girls Researching Our World) event called "The Science Behind the News". At this event we were able to conduct four small group sessions with 10 - 12 middle school aged girls and educate them on the threats facing the future of our crops. We were able to teach them about heat and drought stress and show them our greenhouse and growth chambers that we use to conduct research on combating these stresses.
The girls were also given the opportunity to plant their own wheat and subject it to a mini experiment to demonstrate the effects of greenhouse gases. After planting their wheat in clear cups, half were placed under a lamp without a plastic bag and the other half were placed under the lamp inside plastic bags. After the tour of our greenhouses and growth chambers they were able to measure the soil temperature of both the wheat inside the bags and out. They were surprised to see such a large increase in soil temperature in such a short time from being within the bag!
