About the 2014 Lecturer | Dr. Charlie Brummer

Dr. Charlie Brummer is Director of the Forage Improvement Division at the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation and conducts research on alfalfa and tall fescue breeding and genetics. Dr. Brummer’s research program focuses on practical cultivar development, germplasm evaluation and incorporation, breeding methodology improvement, and application of genetic markers into forage breeding. He received his B.S. degree from the Pennsylvania State University and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Georgia.

Previously, he was on the faculty at Iowa State University as the forage and bioenergy crop breeder and at the University of Georgia where he served as Professor and Director of the Institute of Plant Breeding. He was awarded the Young Crop Scientist Award from the Crop Science Society of America in 2002. Dr. Brummer has contributed much of his time in service to the Crop Science Society of America and other professional societies. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of Crop Science and he served seven years as associate editor.

He was instrumental in the creation of the Journal of Plant Registrations. Dr. Brummer is fulfilling a term as President of the North American Alfalfa Improvement Conference. He also has served in numerous capacities on the U.S. Legume Crops Genomics Initiative, the Grass Breeders Workshop, the Caucus for the Future of Public Plant Breeding, the National Plant Breeding Coordinating Committee, and the Alfalfa Crop Germplasm Committee. He has served two international visiting professorships and is a Fellow of the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science.
