The overall objective of my Weed Science program at the Southwest Research Extension Center near Garden City, Kansas is to develop new technologies and integrate weed management strategies to enhance sustainable farming and ranching systems. Investigations consist in part of basic research to increase knowledge and understanding of weeds, agronomic crops, their interactions, and ramifications of new technologies. I also conduct applied research to develop, evaluate, and/or refine new methods and technologies for weed management, including testing and developing experimental herbicides, and the integration of multiple weed management strategies to improve weed control and reduce crop and environmental risks.

Contributions from basic research have national and international application. Contributions from applied research are applicable throughout major portions of the Midwest, Great Plains, Intermountain region, and the western U.S. Extension and technology transfer to provide unbiased evaluations of herbicide products and cultural/biological control methods are vital since 75% of the pesticides used in Kansas are herbicides.

Research Projects

  • Weed management in irrigated corn
  • New herbicide development for corn
  • Weed management in dryland grain sorghum
  • Evaluation of herbicide-resistant weeds
