Soil Judging Team

K-State Hosts Regional Soil Judging Contest;
Qualifies for Nationals

Manhattan, KS - Kansas State University recently hosted the 2018 Region 5 Soil Judging Contest from September 17-21. The K-State team placed third overall and qualified for the national contest to be held in spring 2019 in San Luis Obispo, Cal. Seven other teams from Region 5 also competed, including Iowa State University, Missouri State University, University of Minnesota, University of Missouri, University of Nebraska-Omaha, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and South Dakota State University.

Students competed in two event categories: an individual contest and a group judging contest. The teams were then ranked overall based on individual and group scores. Along with K-State, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Iowa State University, and University of Missouri qualified to compete in the national contest next spring.

From K-State, Abigail Kortokrax, sophomore from Azle, TX, placed second in the individual competition.

Other team members include: Peter Bergkamp, junior from Cheney, KS, Trent Haverkamp, senior from Holton, KS, Jagger Borth, sophomore from Meade, KS

Lucas Scott, junior from Olathe, KS, Katie Fross, sophomore from Hays, KS and Megan Owens, junior from Harlan, IA.

The Soil Judging Team was coached by Colby Moorberg, assistant professor of agronomy, and Erin Bush, graduate student in agronomy. The contest was organized by Dr. Mickey Ransom, Dr. DeAnn Presley, and Kim Hay.

The contest is an activity of the American Society of Agronomy and the Soil Science Society of America.
