Biography and Education


Dr. Vara Prasad obtained his BS and MS degrees from Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University in India, and PhD from University of Reading in United Kingdom. He is currently a Professor of Crop Ecophysiology and Director of Center for Sorghum Improvement in the Department of Agronomy at Kansas State University. His research mainly focuses on understanding responses of food grains crop to changing environments (temperature, water and climate change factors) and developing crop management strategies for efficient use of inputs. He is passionate about international research and education. He has several on-going international research programs in Africa (Ghana, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Kenya) and Asia (India, Philippines) focusing on soil, water, nutrient and crop management practices, and stress tolerance for improving crop productivity. Dr. Prasad has published more than 100 peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and served as a peer reviewer for more 35 different international journals. He currently serves on editorial boards of international journals including Crop Science, Agronomy Journal and Journal of Crop Improvement. He teaches two graduate level courses: Crop Physiology; and Advanced Crop Ecology. He has graduated 6 doctoral and 5 master students, and trained more than 30 international scholars. He is an active member of American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, Soil Science Society of America, American Association of Advancement of Science and International Society for Agricultural Meteorology.

Dr. Prasad does not have a formal extension appointment. However, most of research in West Africa (Ghana, Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger) is associated with participatory research done in the farmers field and deals with technology transfer. These technologies mainly include cropping systems (rotations and intercropping), integrated fertilizer management, efficient water management and evaluation of genotypes for yield improvement and abiotic stress tolerance.


  • AGRON 840 - Crop Physiology
    To provide knowledge base and improve understanding of various plant or crop physiological processes at cellular, whole-plant and crop canopy levels and their interaction with environment. Crop physiology is the study of various fundamental plant physiological processes that finally integrate to produce crop biomass and yield.
  • AGRON 950 - Advanced Crop Ecology
    This is a discussion based course with a focus of impact of various stresses (mainly temperature, water, nutrition, carbon dioxide, ozone, ultra-violet radiation and selected biotic pests) interact with each other and influence crop growth, development and yield processes. The various management practices for efficient use of inputs (water and nutrient) will be reviewed and discussed.

Crop Response & Adaptation to Environmental Conditions
Crop production is highly sensitive to environmental changes and variation. Kansas has wide gradient of environments, particularly with rainfall and temperatures. Annual rainfall varies from 16 inches on western border to over 40 inches in Southeast, and as we move from north to south, temperature increases. Crops in Kansas are often exposed to water stress, heat and cold stress during crop growing season leading to decreased biomass, grain yield and quality. Thus, crop production is always challenging to farmers and researchers.

The goal of my research program is to seek ways to help farmers understand and overcome the risks associated with environmental stresses.


The main focus of my program is to conduct research that improves our understanding of how crop plants respond and adapt to changing environmental conditions.

These conditions include:

  • abiotic factors such as water (drought)
  • temperature (hot and cold temperatures)
  • nutrient stress
  • biotic pest infestations
  • alterations in crop management strategies associated with genetic improvements
  • changes in cultural practices
  1. Understand crop responses to abiotic (drought, temperature, nutrient and climate change factors) and biotic (disease, pests and weeds) stress.
  2. Conduct research to develop best management practices for efficient use of resources, maximising crop yield and minimizing environmental risk.
  3. Use and improve crop growth models to identify yield gaps, evaluate crop management practices, and impact of environmental, nutrient and biotic stress on crop production.
