Dr. Davina Rhodes
Biography & Education
My research focuses on nutritional improvement of food crops. Work in my lab combines human nutrition, crop genetics, and cereal chemistry tools to determine how nutrient composition in food is controlled by genomic differences in food plants and how that impacts human nutrition.
I am originally from Florida, where I earned my bachelor's degree in Environmental Science at New College of Florida. I received my master's degree in Human Nutrition at the University of Illinois in Chicago, focusing on the genetics of inflammation and chronic disease. I went on to work for two years as a clinical dietitian in an endocrine clinic in Chicago. My doctoral work at University of South Carolina focused on the genetic variation of sorghum grain nutrients and the anti-inflammatory effects of sorghum grain flavonoids. After finishing my PhD, I worked as a National Institute of Food and Agriculture postdoctoral fellow to develop molecular breeding resources for increased grain carotenoids in sorghum, which was conducted at the USDA-ARS Grain Quality and Structure Research Unit. I've been an Assistant Professor of Nutritional Genomics at K-State since 2017.
