Measuring Plant Biomass

Above-ground wet biomass will be measured as follows.

  1. Cut the plant at the base of the stem (at the soil surface).
  2. Place the plant on a tared balance. Make sure the balance is set to weigh in grams (not ounces, not pounds). Make sure that all leaves and stems are on the balance. Make sure to add in the leaf used to measure leaf area.
  3. Record the weight in grams (g).
